Hardening is done to the obvious things
Windows are protected, the roof is upgraded, and a generator is installed. Then a roof hatch, a louvre, a set of double doors or a rooftop unit fails and the building is open to weather regardless of everything else. Hardening is only as good as its weakest element, and the weakest element is by definition the one nobody thought about.
What gets missed
- Roof hatches and skylights.
- Louvres and air intakes.
- Rooftop equipment and its attachment.
- Overhead and roll-up doors.
- Generators, fuel and switchgear sited below flood elevation.
How we handle it
- 01Survey every opening and penetration, not the obvious ones.
- 02Upgrade attachments as well as elements.
- 03Relocate or protect equipment below flood elevation.
- 04Prioritize by what fails first, not by what is easiest.
- 05Document what was hardened and, honestly, what was not.
Walk the roof and list every penetration and every piece of equipment. That list is where hardening projects find the items that would have failed, and it is a walk that takes an hour.

A partially hardened building is not a hardened building, and we will say what remains unprotected rather than letting a completed project imply more than it delivered.
